2017 New York Book Show
As book compositors, NMSG's focus is generally on words, but at this year's New York Book Show the visuals were the thing.
Two very different but highly creative graphic novels, a book of poetry in which the appearance of the book package as well as the type on the page are important elements, and a vividly photographed cookbook won North Market Street Graphics recognition for prepress/composition work. All four of these titles were published by the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.
The New York Book Show, an annual event presented by the Book Industry Guild of New York (BIGNY), now in its thirty-first year, was held October 12, 2017, at Battery Gardens in Battery Park, New York. Representing NMSG at the show were Vicky Dawes, vice president, and Lainey Wolfe, director of sales.

NMSG’s first-place title in the Adult Graphic Novel category is The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, by Sony Liew (Pantheon imprint). This imaginative interweaving of individual story with the history of a nation has been universally acclaimed and credited with stimulating a fresh look at the evolution of Singapore.
Richard McGuire’s Sequential Drawings (Pantheon imprint) won a second-place award in the same category. This book assembles the deceptively simple “spot drawings” the artist has been publishing in The New Yorker for more than a decade and reveals the stories they tell.
Anne Carson’s chapbook-style collection Float (Alfred A. Knopf imprint) received third place in the Poetry category. The title reveals the design integrity behind the production of this book—each piece “floats” independently within the overall collection, both physically and metaphorically.
Mozza at Home (Alfred A. Knopf imprint), the latest offering from chef and restaurateur Nancy Silverton, with Carolynn Carreno, received a merit award in the Cookbook category. Aimed at the home cook rather than the professional chef, the recipes in this book, amply supplemented with full-color photographs, are ideal for entertaining.
