100 Years of Knopf

100 Years of Knopf

imageNMSG congratulates Alfred A. Knopf on its 100th anniversary!

Alfred A. Knopf founded his eponymous publishing house in New York in 1915. It quickly became a powerhouse notable for the quality of the books bearing its imprint. Knopf characterized his mission as simply to publish “good books.”

During its first century in the industry, Knopf published 35 Nobel Prize winners, more than 50 Pulitzer Prize winners, more than 30 National Book Award winners, and countless bestsellers—more than 11,000 titles in all. Its illustrious roster of authors has included everyone from Louisa May Alcott to Howard Zinn, from Jean-Paul Sartre to Miss Piggy.

To commemorate the centenary, Knopf has published an impressive limited-edition anniversary volume (not for sale) listing every book produced under the Knopf imprint and including an index of Knopf authors. NMSG was honored to provide the composition work for this volume and to be cited as one of Knopf’s “long-time partners in book production.” As in so many Knopf books published in recent decades, “Composed by North Market Street Graphics” appears in the colophon at the back of the book.

Knopf’s well-established reputation for publishing books of the highest caliber is based on both editorial and production values—worthy and enduring content as well as beautiful and innovative design. For more than 20 years, NMSG has worked closely with Knopf and its Senior Vice President and Director of Production, Andy Hughes, to produce many of its most notable releases, including books by Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Sharon Olds, and National Book Award winners Robert Caro and Joan Didion. One of most recent collaborations was the production of the bestselling The Girl in the Spider’s Web, by David Lagercrantz, the latest in the wildly popular series of novels begun by Stieg Larsson.

Every book published by Knopf is trademarked with the famous borzoi logo. Although there are many variations of the borzoi logo, each is readily recognized as the mark of one of the most respected publishers in the world. NMSG is proud of our long-standing association with Alfred A. Knopf, and we wish them continued success in their second century of publishing.
